Testing on production feels faster. It is also how a small plugin conflict becomes an afternoon of downtime.
Prefer staging when
- You are changing checkout, payments, or membership access
- The fix needs multiple plugin toggles to isolate a cause
- You are upgrading PHP or a parent theme with heavy overrides
- The site is a client property where uptime is contractual
Production-first is sometimes correct
- The site is already down and staging does not exist yet
- You need a minimal rename/disable to restore admin access
- Hosting-level failures must be confirmed on the affected environment
A practical rule
Stabilize first if visitors cannot use the site. Experiment second, on a copy, when the risk of further breakage is high.
I do not invent SLA clocks or guarantee that every production touch is risk-free. The goal is deliberate sequencing.
If you are stuck between “fix live now” and “wait for staging,” describe the URL, symptoms, and whether admin still loads.
